The history of Fate Effect is quite interesting, and includes other well-known Gulf Coast musicians. The first band Nicholson and Smith were in together was Sacred, with Jared Denmark and Bernie Toothacker in the early 2000s. A few years later, in the mid-2000s, Smith and Shaw were in a band called Chaotic Seen, with drummer Darwin McLeod. In 2008 Smith and Shaw joined Hafnium, which also included founding members Todd Arrington and Matt Wilson. 2010 brought Smith and Eric Holley, Jeff Fallon, and Dillon Zehner together to form Tetrahelix. After Tetrahelix broke up, Shaw, Smith, and Nicholson kept in touch over the years. In 2018 Smith and Shaw found themselves together, jamming a lot of their old music, and realized all that was missing was Nicholson to bring the thunder to the equation. Finally, in mid-2022, Fate Effect was born.

Fate Effect, which formed April 20th, 2022, includes Derek Smith (lead vocals/guitar); Mike Shaw (bass/backing vocals); and Heath Nicholson (drums). This is one of the new, up and coming bands on the Gulf Coast. Fate Effect has quickly gained attention through multiple live shows the band has played since this past summer, and other bands are chomping at the bit to play with them.

Fate Effect’s style can be described as a combination of genres – alternative hard rock, garage rock, grunge, and nu metal. Influences include Tool, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Deftones, Stone Temple Pilots, Highly Suspect, Pantera, Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden, Chevelle, Sevendust, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Currently, the band’s primary focus for live shows is the rock and metal crowd of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, as well as other coastal states in the Southeast. Fate Effect is also developing a nice following in Mobile, Alabama, thanks to some successful shows they’ve played with fellow Massive Media bands. A highlight for Fate Effect at the end of 2022 was playing the Massive Pit Fest December 17th at The Juke Joint in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The band’s goal is to someday “reach across the world and blur the lines of genres”.
